*BGSBU Hosts National Seminar on Regional Languages and Nation-Building Under NEP 2020* *LIAQAT ALI KHATANA* Rajouri, February 19 : Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) successfully organized a National Seminar on “The Role of Regional Languages in Nation-Building with Respect to NEP 2020”, in collaboration with the Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, Ministry of Education, Government of India. In his address, BGSBU Vice Chancellor Prof. Jawaid Iqbal highlighted the transformative impact of NEP 2020 on India’s education system, emphasizing its focus on multilingualism and regional languages. He underscored the role of universities in implementing the policy’s vision by fostering research, curriculum development, and academic discourse in regional languages. Prof. Iqbal further announced the establishment of new departments within the School of Humanities and Languages, including Sanskrit, and the introduction of FYUP programs in various university departments, including the College of Engineering and Technology. Chairman of the Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, Shri Chamu Krishna Shastry, in his video message, commended BGSBU for organizing the seminar on a subject of national significance. He stressed the need for collective efforts to strengthen regional languages as pillars of India’s knowledge ecosystem and emphasized their role in cultural identity and intellectual empowerment. Eminent linguist Prof. R.C. Sharma from the University of Delhi, who graced the event as Chief Guest, spoke on language as a powerful tool for thought, creativity, and policymaking. He lauded BGSBU for its commitment to promoting regional languages as a catalyst for educational and socio-economic development. Prof. Shreedhar Mishra, Director of Central Sanskrit University, Jammu, emphasized the importance of Rashtriya Bhasha in nation-building, cultural preservation, and knowledge dissemination. Mr. Abhishek Sharma, IAS, Registrar, BGSBU, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the role of regional languages in administration and governance. He advocated for policies that promote linguistic inclusivity to ensure regional languages remain integral to public discourse and higher education. Prof. M.J. Warsi, Dean Academic Affairs, BGSBU, and Seminar Director, spoke on the intrinsic link between language and cognitive development, emphasizing the role of regional languages in innovation, governance, and social cohesion. The seminar, he noted, aimed to address linguistic diversity challenges while balancing language preservation with global integration. The event also featured contributions from Mr. Sudhanshu Bhushan of Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, Mr. Mohd Farooq Muztar, Founder of HEM Rajouri, and Mr. Qayoom Mir, Administrator of Auqaf Rajouri, who commended BGSBU’s efforts in promoting linguistic diversity through academic initiatives. Adding to the academic significance of the occasion, two books authored by Dr. A.A. Shah, Dr. Mushtaq Siddiqui, and Prof. Rafiq Anjum were released during the seminar. The book launch was widely appreciated as a step towards fostering research and literary contributions in regional languages. The seminar saw the participation of leading educationists, associate deans, department heads, research scholars, and students, fostering a rich academic exchange on the role of language in national development. Dr. Marya Aslam, Head of the Department of English and Seminar Coordinator, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the importance of regional languages in inclusive education and cultural preservation. Dr. Tanvir Ahmed, Assistant Professor in the Department of English, conducted the proceedings, ensuring seamless discussions and presentations, while Dr. Shams Kamal Anjum, Head of the Department of Arabic, proposed the vote of thanks. The event featured insightful discussions, paper presentations, and interactive sessions, with scholars and researchers presenting papers in multiple languages, including Hindi, English, Urdu, Gojri, and Pahari, reflecting India’s rich linguistic diversity.
